Abdulnaser Sayma

Professor of Energy Engineering

Abdulnaser Sayma is the Head of Department of Engineering at City, University of London, and the Director of the Thermo-Fluid Research Centre.
Professor Sayma obtained a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from Birzeit University in Palestine, MSc in Energy Technology from Salford University and a PhD from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in 1994.
He was a research positions with the Rolls-Royce Vibrations University Technology Centre at Imperial College London till 2005. He became a Professor of Computational Fluid Dynamics at University of Sussex in 2006 until joining City, University of London as a Professor of Energy Engineering in 2013.

Jafar Al-Zaili

Lecturer in Power and Propulsion

Dr Al-Zaili is a member of Turbomachinery and Energy Systems Research Group at City and the Programme Director for Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Since joining City in 2015, he has been involved in a number of research projects, mainly in the field of small-scale gas turbines for renewable energy applications. His current research focus is on: Optimisation of micro gas turbines for solar power applications including thermal energy storage, operation and control; Low carbon microturbine-based propulsion system for small air vehicles; Aero-thermal design of small turbomachines; Impact of the distributed generation in large cities on the level of pollution; Pricing and market design for distributed generation and microgrids; High-temperature Modular compact thermal energy storage with focus on solar applications; Pollution reduction for combustion of hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel; The dynamics between low-carbon power technologies and supporting policies.

Tala El Samad

Lecturer in Thermo-Fluids for Energy Systems

Dr Tala El Samad is a Lecturer at City, and is the Programme Director for the Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics MSc.
She obtained her BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Balamand (Lebanon) in 2014 and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Masdar Institute, now Khalifa University, (UAE) in 2016, where she was also a research assistant working on new methods for enhancing biodiesel production. She was awarded a PhD in Energy from Cranfield University (UK) in 2020 for her doctoral work titled «Investigation of the Feasibility of Employing a Radial Turbine for a Utility-Scale Supercritical CO₂ Power Cycle». Dr El Samad has been at City since completing her doctoral research.
